A territory-led approach to conservation

Sur Conservation is a conservation initiative grounded in territory-led work and long-term care for land, sea, and life. At its core, we develop and support projects that protect ecosystems, engage responsibly with place, and foster meaningful relationships between people, communities, and the territories they inhabit.

Rooted in place, guided by context

In practice, our work is primarily rooted in Chilean Patagonia, with additional projects developed in Costa Rica. We respond to the specific ecological, cultural, and social conditions of each place, understanding conservation as a situated practice—grounded in territory, informed by local realities, and guided by responsibility, care, and continuity over time.

Origins and shared vision

Sur Conservation emerged from a shared way of inhabiting the world. It was founded by Francisco and Yasna, life partners united by a common commitment to conservation and care for territory. Their work grew through time spent in the field, close to land and sea, where conservation practice, spatial thinking, and respect for place converged.

While united by purpose, their paths were complementary.
Francisco’s work focused on conservation and the communication of nature, with a deep dedication to territories, ecosystems, and the relationships that connect people to place. Yasna’s work is rooted in architecture and habitat, exploring how spatial strategies, design, and collective processes can support long-term care for territories and communities.

Together, Sur Conservation took shape as a shared vision grounded in love for territory, responsibility, and the belief that conservation must be lived, practiced, and sustained over time.

Francisco’s life and work were tragically interrupted in Costa Rica. In response, Sur Conservation honors his legacy by continuing the work and values he shared with Yasna, moving forward with the same commitment to conservation, care for place, and responsibility toward land and life.

Connected initiatives

Beyond its core work, Sur Conservation also develops and supports complementary initiatives. One of them is Change Your Habitat, focused on community-based habitat and spatial projects that explore intentional living, collective care, and long-term impact in Costa Rica.
